Frequently asked questions
Find answers to your questions about the AT&T Cell Booster series
What is a Cell Booster?
AT&T Cell Booster is a device that acts as a miniature cell tower and enables you to improve the quality of your organization’s indoor wireless service. If you have indoor wireless coverage that’s less than full strength, you can check your location for service and install a Cell Booster device to help boost coverage.
Is a Cell Booster right for my agency?
If your agency is located in an area where FirstNet, Built with AT&T, provides cellular service, your indoor signal strength is 2 bars or less and you are able to comply with all of the transport requirements outlined in the AT&T Cell Booster User - Technical Requirements Guide, AT&T Cell Booster may be the perfect solution for you. An AT&T Cell Booster is designed for up to 64 simultaneous sessions and provides in-building coverage of up to 15,000 square feet per device, depending on building layout and construction. Up to 6 Cell Booster Pros can be used at a street address, bringing the total space to 90,000 square feet for up to 384 simultaneous sessions. An AT&T Cell Booster may not be used as a Radio Frequency source for a Distributed Antenna System.
What are the broadband Internet requirements?
The required bandwidth depends on the number of simultaneous users you want to support and whether data-intensive applications will be used.
The minimum required bandwidth recommended:
Cell Booster:
- Broadband minimum downlink bandwidth - 5Mbps
- Broadband minimum uplink bandwidth - 1Mbps
1 Cell Booster Pro:
- Broadband minimum downlink bandwidth - 25Mbps
- Broadband minimum uplink bandwidth - 5Mbps
2 Cell Booster Pro devices:
- Broadband minimum downlink bandwidth - 30Mbps
- Broadband minimum uplink bandwidth - 7Mbps
3 Cell Booster Pro devices:
- Broadband minimum downlink bandwidth - 35Mbps
- Broadband Minimum uplink bandwidth - 9Mbps
4 Cell Booster Pro devices:
- Broadband minimum downlink bandwidth – 40Mbps
- Broadband Minimum uplink bandwidth – 11Mbps
5 Cell Booster Pro devices:
- Broadband minimum downlink bandwidth - 45Mbps
- Broadband Minimum uplink bandwidth - 13Mbps
6 Cell Booster Pro devices:
- Broadband minimum downlink bandwidth - 50Mbps
- Broadband Minimum uplink bandwidth - 15Mbps
5G Cell Booster Pro
- The AT&T 5G Cell Booster Pro requires a minimum of 100Mbps / 25Mbps, however a 1Gbps / 100Mbps connection is recommended.
Why is a GPS antenna required?
Each AT&T Cell Booster Pro must have the GPS antenna attached so the device can lock location as required to support e911 emergency support teams. This must be permanently attached to the unit, otherwise the device will stop working after a power cycle. There is no waiver for this requirement.
How secure is AT&T Cell Booster Pro?
All AT&T Cell Boosters use industry-standard encryption techniques and algorithms, including:
- Advanced Encryption Standard (AES) 128 and 256
- Triple Data Encryption Standard (3DES)
- Commercial algorithms, including RC4 with a minimum equivalent of 128-bit
All traffic between the AT&T Cell Booster and AT&T’s secure core network travels within a highly secure Internet Protocol Security (IPSec) tunnel. You must comply with all the settings listed in the AT&T Cell Booster User – Technical Guide for your device to activate and work properly.
The Cell Booster is 889 Compliant to protect National Security by limiting the government’s access to “covered” equipment or services manufactured or provided by certain companies or their subsidiaries or affiliates with known ties to the People’s Republic of China.
The cell booster lineup follows FirstNet, Built with AT&T security policies with an available corporate certification.
Is there a monthly charge for the AT&T Cell Booster products?
The AT&T Cell Booster and AT&T Cell Booster Pro (LTE) do not have a monthly charge. The AT&T 5G Cell Booster Pro is $14.99/month for FirstNet primary agencies and $19.99/month for FirstNet extended primary agencies, per device.
How many calls or data sessions can the AT&T Cell Booster support?
AT&T Cell Booster supports up to 8 sessions at the same time. AT&T Cell Booster Pro and AT&T 5G Cell Booster Pro support up to 64 sessions.
Is my AT&T Cell Booster compatible with tablets?
Yes, tablets will work on AT&T Cell Booster and Cell Booster Pro. Wi-Fi is the best choice for accessing the internet using non-traditional wireless devices, but they’ll also work on your Cell Booster.
What is closed mode?
Closed mode is one of two Cell Booster Pro device modes of operation (the other being Open mode). With Closed mode, only FirstNet wireless users specified on the User List can use the Cell Booster Pro device.
Phone numbers not on the User List will still attempt to connect to the Cell Booster Pro, but will not be able to access voice, data, or texting. These devices may appear to have no service, or service without access to the network. When these devices leave the area, airplane mode might need to be toggled for them to access the AT&T and FirstNet network. To prevent this from happening, set the Cell Booster Pro to Open mode.
